LED Grow Lights – The Future of Horticulture

LED technology develops continuously and addresses the issues that we face when it comes to energy saving in various fields of industries. Over the years, growers have preferred the use of HPS (High-Pressure Sodium lights) due to its high production of light.

However, the HPS lights generate a lot of heat as a result of its high-intensity output. To overcome the problem of excess heat, additional ventilation is required to maintain sufficient airflow. Compared to the LED setup, the initial setup of HPS lights cost less, but adding HVAC (Heat, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) systems will increase the cost significantly as a large amount of energy will be used for the high-intensity lights.

Another important factor to bear in mind is that these actions would cause harmful effects to our environment as well.

Current Usage of LED Grow Lights

The main reason why farmers nowadays prefer using LED rather than traditional lighting is due to the possibility of saving electrical energy. LED grow lights are designed to expand the coverage and the spectrum, they will also reduce your energy consumption and the excess heat produced from traditional lights.

Beyond LED Technology has taken the first step towards horticultural lighting by introducing their very first LED Grow Light.

So, what other advantages are there in using LED for your green operations?

Spectrum

The light spectrum plays an important role that can affect the plant’s quality, strength, and growth rate. Plant growth was usually limited to the type of lighting used, such as Metal Halide, HPS or Fluorescents. But now, LED has brought a massive change in technology by allowing the grower to select their desired wavelength ratios according to the needs of the plants.

Warm, red spectrums can be used for flowering, while cooler blue spectrums can be used for vegetative growing. LED grow lights also come with a full spectrum of white light which has gained popularity due to the high efficiency of the diodes.

Dimmable Lights

Dimming controls can help in managing energy wavelengths according to plant growth and it will also help in saving energy when full energy is not required.

Less Space

Unlike traditional grow lights, LED lights are compact and come in slim panels with adaptability to limited space.

Indoor Gardening

It is not a difficulty anymore, especially for urbanized people to have indoor plantations with LED grow lights. They can be used as the main source of light or as a supplement. Vertical farming has never been easier.

Less Chemical Usage

The gardening environment will be highly controlled and therefore the need for pesticides or chemical treatments will be reduced as well.

No Mercury

LED light fixtures carry a long lifespan (10 years or more depending on the distributor) therefore regular changing of bulb fixtures will not be necessary. However, once the lights reach the limits, it is safe to discard them as they do not contain toxic mercury.

Grow Your Greens, Grow Your Business

Businesses, in general, aim to increase profits and cut down losses. Your investment in long-lasting LED Grow Lights can benefit grow operations with improved efficiency and lower costs.
